No More Mailing Cigarettes Send To U. S. Soldiers In Afghanistan And Iraq

In Iraq and Afghanistan are many U.S. troops and now they can not receive cigarettes by mail sent by their friends and families, because of the new law which doesn’t allow underage sales through the mail according to The Associated Press.

On June 29 went this new law which mandates that all packages with tobacco should be sent with a special type of U.S. Postal Service and it requires a signature for delivery. But that Postal Service is delivering tobacco packages to only a few military addresses abroad.

Family and friends now are not agree with the news and hope it will be changed, because now they can’t send care packages to their loved ones.

April Woods is a wife of a military is 26 and she said that she would frequently send her husband, who is a soldier in Afghanistan, pictures, drink mixes, snacks and Marlboros. She also added that her husband has limited access to stores on the bases and usually doesn’t carry much cash while stationed abroad. Woods said that it is ridiculous the fact that they take so much away from their soldiers.

The new law was introduced to prevent minors from buying cigarettes with the help of mail and stop trafficking by asking for a signature.

FedEx and UPS do not allow consumer-to-consumer shipping of tobacco, so the best option for friends and families to send care packages is the U.S. Postal Service.The spokeswoman for Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl, is Lynn Becker who said that the effect that the new law has on soldiers was unintentional. She also added that the senator is looking for an alternative method to help troops receive cigarettes.

Susan Baldwin is the mother of two sailors in the Navy and one of them is overseas, is nervous and frustrated and now she can’t send him his favorite cigarette brand with menthol and coffee.She said that her kids are her life and she wants always to help them. This new law breaks her heart because from two things that her son is asking for she can send only one of them.
